Charl Schwartzel’s return to form continued in the second round of the Safeway Open on the PGA Tour on Friday as he signed for a second four-under-par 68 in a row to head into the weekend on eight-under in a share of 17th.
The trend of incredibly low scores on the PGA Tour’s lower-profile events continued as the unheralded Sam Burns of the United States added a seven-under 65 to his opening 64 to lead at 15-under, two strokes clear of Harry Higgs. The equally unheralded Higgs carded an eye-watering 62 which included an albatross on the par-five ninth.
Schwartzel, starting his round on the 10th, eased into his work with eight consecutive pars before he birdied the 18th. He handed back that shot on the first with a bogey, but birdies on the second, third, fifth and ninth took him to his 68.
Branden Grace, who also opened with a 68, shot a one-under 71 in the second round to find himself at five-under for the tournament in a share of 54th and right on the cut.
