Garrick Higgo carded a one-under-par 71 on Friday to lead four South Africans into weekend play in the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Three birdies and two bogeys saw him to a tournament total of four-under-par for a share of 25th place, eight shots off the lead shared by Open champion Shane Lowry of Ireland and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick. Both leaders added brilliant seven-under 65s to their opening rounds of 67 for a one-shot edge over Tyrell Hatton.
The other South Africans who made the cut were Thomas Aiken, who shot four-under 68 to move to one-under for the tournament, Christiaan Bezuidenhout who was at level-par after his second successive 72, and Erik van Rooyen who added a 68 to his opening 76 to also make the cut on level-par.
Overnight leader Justin Harding had a terrible time of it in his second round after he opened with a 66, making six bogeys and two doubles on his way to a nine-over 81 with just two birdies on his card. He missed the cut, together with Dean Burmester, Brandon Stone, Justin Walters, Branden Grace and George Coetzee.
