Dawie van der Walt got his third round going on Saturday with four birdies in the opening nine to move to eight-under in the PGA Tour’s Vivint Houston Open, but three bogeys on his way home saw him finish the day on one-under 69.
That left him still very much in contention at five-under for the tournament, four shots off the pace set by halfway leader Sam Burns. Former world number one Jason Day of Australia was in a share of second on eight-under with Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz after they each signed for a three-under 67.
Van der Walt birdied three of the first four holes, and then picked up his fourth shot for the round on the par-three ninth. Things were tougher for him going home, however, and bogeys on 11, 12 and 16 put him in a share of sixth place heading into the final round.
Erik van Rooyen continued his solid tune-up for his debut Masters next week with a second one-under 69 in a row to move to one-under for the tournament in a share of 22nd, while Justin Harding was two-over in his third round and for the tournament in a share of 46th.
The action will be televised on SuperSport channel 213 at 8pm this evening.
