Erik van Rooyen finished strongly on Sunday in the final round of the PGA Tour’s Vivint Houston Open at the Memorial Park Golf Course, Houston, Texas as he carded a three-under-par 67 to move up the leaderboard into a share of 20th.
The tournament was won by Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz at 13-under-par, two shots clear of Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. Van Rooyen was on four-under for the tournament after rounds of 71-69-69-67 and he goes into this week’s Masters on some good momentum.
Van Rooyen started his final round with a bogey on the first, and immediately regained that stroke with a birdie on the par-three second. He dropped again on the fifth, and birdied the eighth ahead of the turn. He picked up three more birdies in the final five holes for a strong finish.
Sharing 20th with him was Dawie van der Walt after his closing round of one-over 71.
Van Rooyen hit nine of 13 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation as he wrapped up his preparation for Augusta National which promises to play very differently in its cold and probably rainy November date as opposed to the normal April in the spring.
