It was a good start to the PGA Tour season for Erik van Rooyen on Thursday as he made four birdies and a bogey on his way to a three-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
He found himself in a share of 40th spot behind a three-way tie for the lead at eight-under by Americans Peter Malnati and Jason Kokrak and Joaquín Niemann of Chile. The lead by two from a group of six on six-under.
Also on three-under in a share of 40th was South African MJ Daffue, while the third South African in the field was Branden Grace, who carded a one-under 69 to start his 2021 campaign.
