Schwartzel makes the weekend at Torrey Pines

Although he started with a pair of consecutive birdies on Friday, Charl Schwartzel finished up making level-par 72 in the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California.

That left him at two-under for the tournament, in a share of 40th, and seven shots behind the leader, Viktor Hovland of Norway, who carded a seven-under-par 65 to move to nine-under for the tournament. He leads by one from a group of six players, including John Rahm, Adam Scott, Tony Finau and Patrick Reed.

Schwartzel made birdies on the 10th and the 11th after starting his round on the back nine, and picked up two more on the 18th and the first around the turn, but a pair of bogeys on each of his nines stymied his efforts to climg higher up the leaderboard.

Rory Sabbatini, the South African turned Slovakian, once again got himself into contention, and six birdies and a bogey saw him sign for a five-under 67 and take up position four off the lead in a share of 14th position.

Dylan Frittelli signed for a one-over 73 to make the cut in a share of 54th, and Louis Oosthuizen also got to the weekend’s action with a one-under 71 in the second round to make the cut – like, Frittelli, on the number.

Erik van Rooyen missed out after his second-round 71 was not enough together with his opening 74 to get to play on the weekend.
