Although Branden Grace made three bogeys on Saturday in the third round of the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, he set himself up for a run at the title as his four-under 68 moved him into a share of third ahead of the final round.
He will start the final round just one shot off the lead held jointly by America’s Grayson Murray and Puerto Rican Rafael Campos who are on 14-under for the tournament. Grace shares third with Australia’s Cameron Percy.
The South African started his round with a bogey on the par-four first after he was unable to reach the green in two out of the rough after his tee-shot wandered away from the fairway. The same thing happened on the fourth with the same result, and, on the par-five 15th, his tee shot found a fairway bunker, and he was only able to reach the green in four and two-putt for bogey there.
But in between all that, he was at his best. He made consecutive birdies on the second and third, and picked up two more shots on five and nine with smart regulation golf and good putting. He made three more gains on his way in on the 13th, 16th and 18th and is well set for a move into the lead on Sunday.
