Branden Grace carded a second-round two-under 69 on Friday in the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
But that was barely enough to cope with the astonishing second successive eight-under 63 from the veteran former Open champion Stewart Cink, who has raced to 16-under for the tournament at the halfway mark and a five-stroke lead over Canada’s Corey Conners.
Grace is at five-under for the tournament, 11 shots off the pace. He was bogey-free for his round during which picked up birdies on the fifth and the seventh, after which he parred his way home.
Dylan Frittelli signed for a four-under 67 to move to four-under for the tournament. He made an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys in his second round. Christiaan Bezuidenhout is a further shot back after his second-round of two-under 69 with three birdies and a bogey.
Elsewhere, Dawie van der Walt carded a second-round six-under-par 66 to climb into a share of seventh in the Korn Ferry Tour’s MGM Resorts Championship in Las Vegas. He is six shots back from the lead, held by Canada’s Adam Svensson. Tyrone van Aswegen had a 68 in that second round and is six-under for the tournament.
On the PGA Tour Champions circuit, David Frost was the leading South African after the first round of Chubb Classic in Naples, Florida. He shot a two-under 70, to find himself seven shots off the pace set by Fred Couples’ nine-under 63. Retief Goosen was level-par after the first round, while Ernie Els battled to four-over-par 76.
