Garrick Higgo made seven birdies for the second round in a row on Friday in the second round of the European Tour’s Gran Canaria Lopesan Open at Meloneras Golf in Gran Canaria, Spain.
He dropped just one shot this time as he signed for a six-under 64 to move into a share of seventh place, three strokes behind the leader Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark. The Dane leads by one from the Sunshine Tour’s Kit Kat Pro-Am winner Rhys Enoch of Wales and Wil Besseling of the Netherlands.
Higgo was better off the tee in the second round than he was in the opener, but he will know that he would be able to score even better if he hits more fairways that the 53.8 percent than he did for his second 18. He had 25 putts in his first round, and 26 in his second.
Behind him, Zander Lombard carded a five-under 65 to take up a share of 16th at nine-under, five behind Olesen. He also dropped just a single shot, on the 17th, just as he did in his first round.
Dean Burmester is the next best of the South Africans after a second-round three-under-par 67 took him to eight-under for the tournament and a share of 23rd. Justin Harding is also on eight-under after he matched Burmester’s 67.
Justin Walters was on six-under, Louis de Jager on five-under, while Haydn Porteous missed the cut after his second-successive two-under 68 left him on shot short of the cut line.
Olesen was playing his first event of the 2021 Race to Dubai after suffering a wrist injury early in the year but the arrival of son Cooper in recent weeks helped him put that disappointment behind him. Despite admitting he was short of practice, the 2018 Ryder Cup player carded seven birdies and an eagle to set a course-record 61. England’s Sam Horsfield and Scotland’s Connor Syme share the course record after 61s of their own in round two left them four and six shots back respectively.
