Matthew Spacey fired a five-under-par 67 on Thursday to take the first-round lead of the Bushveld Tour’s two-day event at Modderfontein Golf Club.
He made an eagle-three on the first to get going in the best possible fashion, and then, despite a bogey on the sixth, he picked up four more birdies on his way in to give himself a two-stroke edge over Caylum Boon, Kieron van Wyk and amateur Yurav Premlall.
Benjamin Follett-Smith, Cameron Gurr, Keith Horne and Thabang Simon were a further shot back, with Merrick Bremner, Michael Hollick, Ockie Strydom, Ryan Dreyer and Botswana’s Stuart Smith all one one-under.
The tournament concludes on Friday.
