He’s not quite in contention, but it is a major championship and Ernie Els is not out of the US Senior Open at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska after a second round of level-par 70 saw him climb 28 places on the leaderboard on Friday.
There were only eight rounds under par – there was even a 93 – as Els made four birdies and four bogeys to move to three-over for the tournament in a share of 31st. Jim Furyk leads on four-under, two strokes ahead of first-round leader Stephen Ames of Canada, who carded a three-over 73 to Furyk’s round of the day, a six-under 64. Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain was third at the halfway mark on 0ne-under-par after he shot a one-over 71.
Just ahead of Els in a share of 14th, and very much within striking distance, was Retief Goosen who was one of those who went under par with his ne-under 69. That saw him vault 30 spots up the leaderboard as he made three birdies and two bogeys.
Elsewhere, on the PGA Tour, Dylan Frittelli missed the cut as he attempted to defend his title in the John Deere Classic which he won two years ago. He carded a second-round level-par 71 to miss the cut by one on three-under after 36 holes.
On the Korn Ferry Tour, Dawie van der Walt was on three-under at the halfway mark of the TPC Colorado Championship after a two-under 70 put him in a share of 38th, 10 shots off the lead held by Tyson Alexander of the United States. Tyrone van Aswegen had a one-over 73 and was on two-under in a share of 63rd.
