His closing one-under-par 69 was just not enough for Retief Goosen on Sunday as he finished in a share of second in the US Senior Open Championship in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jim Furyk became just the eighth player to win both the US Open and the US Senior Open as he carded a closing one-over-par 71 to hold off Goosen and Canadian Mike Weir by three shots at seven-under-par for the tournament.

Goosen, who also had a chance to achieve the feat that Furyk did, started with a birdie on the first hole as he set off in pursuit of the title, but he made bogey on five as his charge faltered. He made birdie again on six, but slipped back to level-par for the round with bogey on eight. He bogeyed 10, and then made birdies on 12 and 16, but it was not enough to haul in Furyk, whose second-round 64 proved decisive.

“It was a good week,” said Goosen. “Overall I would say the way I felt early in the week I would have taken second, but it would have been nice to have been in a little closer coming down the last.

“Off to the UK next week and then the Senior British, Sunningdale. I lived in that area for 18 years, so I know the course fairly well, so I’m looking forward to getting back there.”

Ernie Els also finished well with a one-under 69 to climb 12 places into a share of 17th.
