Ashleigh Buhai carded her second-successive three-under-par 69 on Friday to move to a share of third in the individual competition of the Ladies European Tour’s Aramco Team Series-Sotogrande in Spain.
She made four birdies and a bogey in the second round to move to six-under for the tournament, eight shots behind the leader Alison Lee of the United States who signed for another seven-under 65 to go with the same score from the first round. Lee has a seven-stroke lead over Karolin Lampert of Germany.
Stacy Bregman and Lee-Anne Pace were in a share of 17th at the 36-hole mark on one-under for the tournament. Nicole Garcia was on six-over with Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini, Lejan Lewthwaite on seven-over and Casandra Hall on 13-over.
Team Strom produced another excellent day as they carded 13-under-par to lead by one shot after the second round. Linnea Strom, Jenny Haglund, Agathe Sauzon and Alessandro Anzelmo opened their tournament with 14-under-par, which left them tied for third overnight.
Team captain Strom said: “I think as a team we compensate each other very well, everyone makes birdies and whenever someone made a mistake we had another team mate doing something good. We have a very good amateur as well; he made his first ever eagle today so that was fun for us to see that and he gained some confidence from that. We helped each other out very well out there and just enjoyed it.”
One stroke behind the leaders is Team Buhai consisting of Ashleigh Buhai, Bregman, Hayley Davis and Ignacio Morillo. After recording a round of 13-under-par on the first day, they replicated that in the second round to put themselves in contention for the top prize.
Buhai said: “It has been fantastic, and it is so much fun to be playing a team format. I think we have all done really well at pulling our weight and coming in when we needed to, even our amateur. It has been great fun the last two days. The wind got up a lot more today, so it was a little trickier, but we hung in there and did well.”
“It is great playing alongside these two especially a fellow South African and Hayley has been awesome. We played well in the wind today, we thought it we could get to 10 or 11-under we would have a good chance and we got to 13-under today – I’m really fancying our chances going into tomorrow with the team,” Bregman added.
