Branden Grace might have lost out in a six-way play-off on Sunday in the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, but he gave notice that he’s heading back to his very best after he fought his way into that play-off with his closing four-under-par 66.

In the end Kevin Kisner made birdie on the second extra hole, shutting out Grace, Kevin Na, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott and Roger Sloane. The man who led throughout, Russell Henley, slipped to a final round of one-over-par 71 which saw him finish in a share of seventh with defending champion Webb Simpson and Kevin Streelman.

Grace started the day with a bogey, but he immediately went on the offensive to correct that early error. He birdied the second hole, and birdies on five, seven and eight saw him turn in three-under. He dropped two shots with bogeys on 12 and 13, but he bounced back with birdies on 15 and 16. Then came the big 28-footer for birdie on the 18th in regulation to get himself into the play-off, and to give himself the knowledge that he is on an upward trajectory as the PGA Tour heads into the three-tournament FedEx Cup Playoff series starting next week.

Behind him, Erik van Rooyen came storming back from his disappointing third round with a closing five-under 65. He finished in a share of 37th on eight-under for the week.
