Amateur Slade Pickering signed for a four-under-par 68 on Tuesday as he moved into a one-stroke lead in the Big Easy IGT Tour’s Road to the Sunshine Tour #13 at Centurion Country Club.
He started his round on the 10th, and picked up birdies on 11 and 12, before making his only bogey of the day on the par-four 16th. He quickly made up for that immediately after the turn as he made eagle on the par-five first. He picked up one more birdie, on the fifth, as he moved to nine-under-par through 36 holes.
“I hit a good drive down the fairway,” said Pickering of his eagle. “I had a pitching wedge in, and left myself about a 20-footer which I made for the eagle.”
Hard on his heels are Jaco van der Merwe, Keelan van Wyk, Dean O’Riley, Jason Froneman and Herman Loubser, all on eight-under. Keaton Slatter, Therion Nel, Franklin Manchest and DK Kim are all on seven-under in a share of seventh.
That makes a wealth of experience chasing Pickering, but he’s not going to let that concern him. “I don’t really take much notice of what guys around me are doing,” he said. I concentrate on my own game and try and do what I set myself to achieve.”
