Slow start for Bezuidenhout in Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship

It was a quiet start for Christiaan Bezuidenhout on Thursday in the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio, as he carded a one-under-par 70 for a share of 64th.

Bezuidenhout made three birdies and two bogeys to reach 18 holes seven shots off the lead which was shared at eight-under-par by 2018 Alfred Dunhill Championship winner David Lipsky of the United States and Stephan Jaeger of Germany. Also at one-under after the first round was the other South African in the field, Dawie van der Walt.

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship is the second in the three-tournament climax of the Korn Ferry season, after which the top 25 players in that series will earn PGA Tour cards. The final tournament in the series is next week’s Korn Ferry Tour Championship at Victoria National Golf Club in Evansville, Indiana.

Bezuidenhout is currently in seventh position on that list, but is projected to drop 15 places to 22nd based on his opening round. Van der Walt is projected to stay in 77th.
