Ernie Els carded a four-under-par 68 on Saturday to move into a share of 16th place in the PGA Tour Champions Ally Championship in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Els had a quiet start to his round, making four birdies to begin with before dropping a shot on the fifth. Four more pars saw him reach the turn in one-over 37, but he went on something of a tear on the back nine as he made birdies on 10, 12, 14, 17 and 18 without dropping a shot.
He climbed seven places up the leaderboard into a share of 16th at seven-under for the tournament, seven strokes behind the lead which was shared by Doug Barron of the United States and Germany’s Bernhard Langer. They had a one-stroke lead over Joe Durant.
Retief Goosen was also on seven-under through 36 holes after his second round of two-under-par 70. He made four birdies and two bogeys.
David Frost carded his second successive two-under 70 to be four-under for the tournament in a share of 36th.
