Hennie du Plessis played himself into contention in the Challenge Tour’s Big Green Egg German Challenge at Wittelsbacher Golfclub in Neuburg an der Donau on Friday with a four-under-par 67 taking him to a share of sixth at the halfway mark.
After his opening level-par 71, he got things gong in his second round with a superb opening nine of five-under-par 31. There were birdies on one, three, four, seven and eight and not a single dropped shot before the turn, but the second nine was harder work. He started his homeward nine with a bogey on 10, and made two more on 16 and 18. He was able to limit the damage to his scorecard with birdies on 11 and 17.
He goes into the weekend five shots off the lead which is held by Ondrej Lieser of the Czech Republic on nine-under. He has a one-stroke lead over Lukas Nemecz of Austria and Scotland’s Craig Ross.
Mathiam Keyser was on three-under in a share of 16th after also carding a four-under 67, while Jacques Blaauw moved to one-under with his 69 and a share of 31st. JC Ritchie made the cut on the number at one-over after carding a 72, while Martin Rohwer and Oliver Bekker missed out on playing on the weekend.
