Hennie du Plessis got himself within two shots of the lead on Saturday in the third round of the Challenge Tour’s Big Green Egg German Challenge at Wittelsbacher Golfclub in Neuburg an der Donau with a second successive four-under-par 67.

It was the closing nine in the third round which will give him momentum as he plays the final round in the second-last group: He made three birdies with no dropped shots on that final stretch, and that thoughtful, careful play took him to eight-under for the tournament. The leader after 54 holes was Austria’s Lukas Nemecz on 10-under, who was one ahead of Angel Hidalgo of Spain. Du Plessis was one of three players on eight-under.

Mathiam Keyser signed for a three-over 74 to be level-par for the tournament in a share of 42nd. Jacques Blaauw had a four-over 75 and is in a share of 53rd on three-over.

Du Plessis is currently ranked 48th in the Challenge Tour rankings after playing in 12 tournaments since the season began with three tournaments in South Africa. A win will help him in a quest to finish the season inside the top 20 on that list, as those players win promotion to the European Tour for the 2022 season.
