Paula Reto closed with a rush of birdies on Thursday to card an opening three-under-par 69 in the first round of the LPGA Tour’s Cambia Portland Classic.

After a battling opening nine of level-par 36 during which she made three birdies, three pars and three bogeys, she was still at level-par for her round with a birdie on 10 and a bogey on 12. But she made three birdies in a row down the finishing stretch to be one shot off the lead which was shared at four-under by Gemma Dryburgh of Scotland, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda and Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn. Reto shared fourth with four other players.

The other South African in the field is Ashleigh Buhai, and she also started strongly with a two-under-par 70 to be just two off the pace in the opening round. She was level-par all the way until the 13th hole, after which she made two birdies in a row on 14 and 14.
