Retief Goosen had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey on Friday in the first round of the PGA Tour Champions Sanford International in South Dakota to take up a share of seventh after the first round.
He picked up his eagle on the par-five 12th, after making two birdies and a bogey on his opening nine. The eagle got him set for a strong finish, and he obliged with birdies on 15 and 16. He finished the day on five-under 65, just two shots off the lead which was held by KJ Choi and Darren Clarke. They led by one from four players, and Goosen shared seventh with two others.
Ernie Els was one stroke further back after his opening 66, which was a bogey-free effort. David Frost had a one-over 71 to open.
