Ernie Els started the PGA Tour Champions Pure Insurance Championship on Friday with a one-under-par 71 to put him in a share of 20th place, five shots off the lead.
Els made three birdies and two bogeys in a quiet start, but good enough to still be in touch with the lead which was shared by Stuart Appleby of Australia and Germany’s Alex Cjeka on six-under. They led by one from Tom Lehmann and KJ Choi.
