While the leaders were out there going very low, Erik van Rooyen has a solid five-under-par start to the PGA Tour’s CJ Cup @ Summit in Las Vegas to take up a share of 15th after the first round.
It was an eventful start to Van Rooyen’s round, as he made birdie on the first, bogey on the second, and then two consecutive birdies before he made his first par on the fifth. He picked p another birdie on the sixth, and reached the turn in three-under 33. Birdies on 14 and 18 completed his scoring and he was in an 11-way tie for 15th.
Robert Streb led at 11-under, having got it to seven-under after the first six holes with five birdies and an eagle. He made bogey on 11, and then four more birdies on his way in. His 61 led by just one from Keith Mitchell’s 62, and by three from Harry Higgs who carded a 64 for third.
Louis Oosthuizen opened with a two-under-par 70 for a share of 49th in the 78-man field, while Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace were on level-par in 65th.
