Hennie du Plessis closed with a two-under-par 69 on Friday to finish in a share of fifth in the Challenge Tour’s Challenge Costa Brava at Empordà Golf in Girona, Spain.

It was a bogey-free finish for Du Plessis, who made birdies on two of the three par-fives on his way to a tournament total of 13-under-par. That left him six shots off the winning total of 19-under of New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier, who carded a six-under 65 to pull off his maiden Challenge Tour win by one stroke from Marcus Helligkilde of Denmark.

Du Plessis rounded off a good week by climbing 10 places on the Challenge Tour rankings to 28th ahead of the Grand Final in Mallorca on November 4. That puts him tantalisingly close to the top 20 who will earn their European Tour cards after that Grand Final.

Oliver Bekker remained in eighth place on the rankings after he also closed with a 69 to finish on eight-under for the tournament in a share of 20th. He is almost certain to win his European Tour card after the Grand Final.
