Gerhard Pepler carded a two-under-par 70 on Wednesday on a tough day for scoring in the second round of the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour’s Race to Q-School to take a one-stroke lead after 36 holes at Riviera on Vaal.

Pepler made six birdies, a bogey and a triple-bogey seven on the ninth, and, at eight-under-par for the tournament ahead of the final round, was one shot clear of first-round leader Jason Froneman, who signed for a level-par 72 in the second round, and Leon Vorster, who had a three-under 69 to climb into his share of second.

France’s Maverick Faber, Jonathan Waschefort and amateur LB Boshoff were in a share of fourth on five-under, while Keanu Pestana, Joe Heraty of England, Ryan Estment and amateur Willie Olivier made up the balance of the top 10 on four-under in a share of seventh.

Pepler, with birdies on three and eight, and a bogey on five, had reached the final hole of the front nine in one-under, before dropping three strokes on the ninth to turn in two-over. He birdied 10, 16, 17 and 18 to regain those lost shot and pick up one more.

The tournament concludes on Thursday.
