Jeb’ Kruger opened his campaign in the Japan Golf Tour’s ISPS Handa Championship in Japan on Thursday with a five-under-par 66 to be in a share of 19th after the first round at PGM Ishioka Golf Club in Omitama, Ibaraki.
Kruger made four birdies on the front nine, on the second, third, fifth and eighth, but he dropped his only shot of the day with a bogey on the 12th. He picked up two more shots down the stretch with birdies on 16 and 18.
The tournament is being led by Yuki Furukawa after he carded a nine-under 62. He leads by one stroke from Yusuke Sakamoto, Eric Sugimoto, Katsumasa Miyamoto and Kazuki Higa. There were five players on seven-under, eight on six-under, and 17 players shared 19th with Kruger on five-under.
The other South African in the field was Shaun Norris and he opened with a four-under-par 67 to be in a share of 37th, five off the lead.
