Paula Reto carded a three-under-par 69 on Thursday in the opening round of the LPGA Tour’s Cognizant Founders Cup, putting her in a share of 22^nd place.

She made four birdies and a bogey to share 22^nd with 14 other players, six shots off the lead. Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden is in front after a superb bogey-free opening round of nine-under-par 63. Sagstrom was one ahead of Megan Khang of the United States, with Nasa Hataoka of Japan in third on seven-under.

Reto birdied the second hole, but made her bogey on the par-three sixth. She made three birdies – on the 10^th, 12^th and 18^th – on her way in, and didn’t drop a shot.

The other South African in the field is Ashleigh Buhai, who opened with a one-over-par 73 and a share of 92^nd.
