Charl Schwartzel kept himself in the mix on Saturday with a three-under-par 69 in the second round of LIV Golf International’s Chicago event putting him in a share of fourth ahead of the final round.
Schwarztel made four birdies and just one bogey to move to six-under-par for the 54-hole event, just four back from the lead which was held by Australia’s Cameron Smith. Smith had a four-under-par 68 to move to 10-under and overhaul first-round leader Dustin Johnson of the United States, who had a one-over-par 73 in his second round. Peter Uihlein was in third with Laurie Canter sharing fourth with Schwartzel.
In the team competition, the American 4 Aces GC team comprising Johnson, Talor Gooch, Pat Perez and Patrick Reed led at 15-under-par. The all- South African Stinger GC with Schwartzel, captain Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace and Shaun Norris were in a share of fourth at 11-under.
Oosthuizen carded a second-round one-under 71 to move to four-under and a share of ninth. Grace had a level-par 72, and, at two-under, is in a share of 17th. Norris continued to bring up the rear of the 48-man field, but signed for a second-round two-under 70 to improve to five-under for the event.
