Jaco Ahlers made two bogeys on Thursday but still posted a six-under-par 64 in the first round of the Asian Tour’s International Series Egypt at Madinaty Golf Club in New Cairo to have a share of fourth place.

Ahlers made eight birdies to counter the two dropped shots, and he was just two shots off the lead which was held by Australia’s Scott Hend. Ahler’s shared third with Canadian Richard T Lee. Hend’s eight-under opener gave him a two-stroke edge over Pawin Ingkhapradit of Thailand and Korean Seungtaek Lee.

Ahlers made three birdies in his first four holes after starting on the 10th to get things going in the best possible way, but when he missed the green on the 16th, he was unable to get up and down and made his first bogey. He closed out his opening nine with consecutive birdies to turn in four-under-par 30. He dropped a shot on the first, missing both fairway and green, but he picked up three more birdies on his way home.

One shot behind Ahlers was Mathiam Keyser, who made an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys for his five-under and a share of sixth. Ian Snyman signed for a three-under 67 and a share of 21st, while Keith Horne had a one-over-par 71 for a share of 72nd. Neil Schietekat was on two-over, and Tristen Strydom battle his way to five-over 75.
