Amateur Gary Kemp carded a one-over-par 73 on Wednesday to win the Bushveld Tour’ Bushveld Series #4 tournament at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s East Course.

Kemp, who was the 36-hole leader in the 54-hole tournament after a pair of three-under 69s, made two birdies and three bogeys in the final round as he held off first-round leader and fellow amateur Kyle de Beer, who closed with a 71, Willem Swart, who had a level-par 72, and Francois van der Walt, who closed with a one-over 73, by one stroke.

It took something of a grandstand finish for Kemp to win, as he made successive birdies on the 17th and 18th to allow him to edge clear. He had made bogeys on four, nine and 12 to slip behind. De Beer was coming for him after a double-bogey on the fifth. De Beer then made birdies on eight, 10 and 12 before dropping a shot on the 15th before birdieing 17. He couldn’t do the same on 18 and had to settle for his share of second.

One shot behind the four battling it out for the win were Jordan Duminy and Dylan O’Leary in a share of fifth on three-under.
