Zander Lombard carded a one-under-par 71 on Thursday in the opening round of the DP World Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship at the Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

Lombard’s two birdies and a bogey put him four shots off the lead which was shared by Frenchmen Julien Guerrier and Matthieu Pavon, and Dane Nicolai Hojgaard. They were one clear of Antoine Rozner of France, Jens Dantorp of Sweden and Pole Adrian Meronk. There were four players on three-under-par.

The other South African in the 50-man field was South African Open champion, Thriston Lawrence, also carded one-under-par 71. His round was a little more adventurous, with four birdies and three bogeys.

The Race to Dubai champion, Rory McIlroy, who can’t be caught for the title – which will be his fourth – also opened with a one-under 71.
