Aldrich Potgieter began his quest for a PGA Tour card with a five-under-par 67 on Tuesday in the first round of the PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry Second Stage at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Georgia.
Potgieter is the only South African in the field for Second Stage which is being played over two courses, with the other being Valencia Country Club in Valencia, California.
He made an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys in his opening round, and shared the lead with American Dawson Armstrong.
Should he get through to the Final Stage, which is scheduled from December 14-17, he will need to finish inside the top five to win his PGA Tour status.
