Erik van Rooyen carded his second one-under-par 70 in a row on Sunday to finish on 12-under-par in a share of eighth in the PGA Tour’s Mexico Open at Vidanta at Vidanta Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
Van Rooyen started with a pair of bogeys on his first two holes, but an eagle on six brought things back to level-par. He made successive birdies on seven and eight, and another on 13, but dropped shots on 10 and 16 saw him finish seven shots behind rookie winner Jake Knapp of the United States.
Knapp closed with a battling even-par 71 to hold off a tough challenge from Sami Valimaki by two strokes after the Finn had to take a penalty drop on the final hole. Stephan Jaeger of Germany, Taiwan’s CT Pan and American Justin Lower shared third on 14-under, three behind Valimaki.
Garrick Higgo battled to a closing four-over-par 75 to finish on one-under for the tournament in a share of 60th. MJ Daffue was 65th on six-over.
