Even though he carded a one-under-par 71 on Friday in the second round of the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, Erik van Rooyen slipped 31 places on the leaderboard into a share of 35th.
Van Rooyen, the defending champion, opened with a double-bogey seven on the first hole. He was able to claw that back with birdie on the third and an eagle on the sixth, but he was back to level-par with a bogey on the eighth. He made pars all the way through the 17th, and then picked up the shot which took his round under par again with a birdie on the 18th.
At five-under-par for the tournament, he was seven strokes off the lead which was shared by Nico Echavarria of Colombia and American Max Greyserman.
In a share of 35th with Van Rooyen was countryman Garrick Higgo, who had a second round of three-under-par 69.
