Charl Schwartzel eagled the first hole of the final round on Saturday on his way to a second-place finish in the Asian Tour’s International Series Qatar as his four-under-par 68 left him five strokes behind the winner.
Schwartzel followed that early eagle with a birdie, but dropped a shot on the sixth in his attempt to chase down Peter Uihlein of the United States. But, despite birdies on 16 and 17, there was no catching the American, who closed with a three-under 69 for his 16-under-par winning total.
Schwartzel was on 11-under, two strokes clear of compatriot Louis Oosthuizen, who had a closing one-under 71 for his nine-under total which gave him a share of third with Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines.
One stroke back in a share of fifth, Dean Burmester had an ace on the eighth and an eagle on the par-four 16th as he closed with a three-under 69.
One back on seven-under in a share of ninth, Jaco Ahlers also had a closing 69, while Ian Snyman rounded out his week with a level-par 72.
Branden Grace was in a share of 13th on five-under after he had a closing level-par 72, while Yurav Premlall was on four-under in a share of 19th. David Meyers had a final round of four-over 76, and was in a share of 26th on two-under. Jbe’ Kruger finished a forgettable weekend with a six-over 78, and he was on 10-over in 75th place.
