Aldrich Potgieter announced his arrival on the South African golfing scene in no uncertain terms over the weekend, and his reward was a 106-place jump in the latest Official World Golf Ranking list issued this week.

The 20-year-old youngster’s runner-up finish in the Nedbank Golf Challenge saw him jump to 226th on the official list. That’s the highest ranking of his short career, and, according to the arcane ranking system, it’s his second-best ever performance after his maiden victory on the Korn Ferry Tour in the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic.

In addition to getting a good boost on the world rankings, he also climbed inside the top 10 South Africans according to the official list. He leapfrogged the likes of Casey Jarvis, Jayden Schaper and Brandon Stone to become the eighth-ranked South African.

Thriston Lawrence remains South Africa’s top-ranked player, and he was up one place to 46th as the end of the year approaches and the first wave of invitations to the Masters go out to the world’s top 50 who are not already exempt. Behind Lawrence, Christiaan Bezuidenhout will be hoping for a strong finish to the year to get into the top 50 from his unchanged 55th spot.

The Asian Tour’s PIF Saudi International gave some much needed assistance to some South African LIV players – none more so than Branden Grace, who finished in a share of sixth and was up 213 places up from 738th to 525th.
