Shaun Norris leapfrogged 91 places on the latest Official World Golf Ranking this week after his victory in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek and moved back towards the list of the world’s top 100 players.
The 42-year-old also got himself four extra ranking points for a multi-win bonus after his victory two weeks earlier on the Japan Golf Tour. His win saw him jump from 220th the week before to 129th as he overtook Robin Williams and Louis Oosthuizen on the list of South Africa’s top golfers according to the official rankings. He is now the fifth-best player in the country.
Norris, who has been ranked as high as 54th on the OWGR after his win in 2020 in the ABU Dhabi HSBC Championship, produced the fourth-best ranking performance of his career with his closing 67 at Leopard Creek, behind his pair of wins in 2021 and 2018 in the Japan Open and his victory at the Steyn City Championship in 2022.
The man he beat at the weekend, Ryan van Velzen, was also up in the rankings. He climbed 112 places to 300th. It was a climb that could have been more substantial had he won, and it could have taken him closer to or beyond his career-high of 271st.
Outside the top 25 South African golfers according to the official lists, Keenan Davidse had a substantial jump of 134 places from 717th to 583rd.
South Africa’s top-ranked golfer, Thriston Lawrence, moved up one place to 45th, despite missing the cut at Leopard Creek, and he now seems almost certain to end the year inside the world’s top 50 which will get him a first-ever invitation to the Masters.
