He opened with a bogey on Sunday in the final round of the PGA Tour’s The Sentry at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout finished the round with a one-under-par 72 to finish in a share of 40th.
While the plain facts sound acceptable enough, Bezuidenhout’s 72-hole tally of 14-under-par left him 21 strokes behind the winner, Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. It was a ridiculously low-scoring affair, and Matsuyama closed with his third eight-under-par 65 of the week after making an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey. He beat American Collin Morikawa by three strokes. Sungjae Im of Korea was third, but his closing eight-under was not enough to get him below 30-under as he finished on 29-under-par.
Bezuidenhout picked up birdies on five and seven, and parred his way home after that. That was just not enough on a day on which 64 was the low round, and one-over 72 was the second-highest score of the day in the limited field event.
