Erik van Rooyen made the cut on the number on Friday when he carded a two-under-par 68 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

Van Rooyen made three birdies without dropping a shot on his front nine – he started the round on the 10th – and he made two bogeys and a birdie on his back nine as he moved to three-under-par for the tournament through 36 holes.

That left him seven shots off the lead which was shared at 10-under by Patrick Fishburn and Denny McCarthy of the United States. They were one stroke ahead of Japan’s Kensei Hirata and Americans Eric Cole and Paul Peterson.

It is Van Rooyen’s first tournament of the new season, and he will look to get better on the greens, and to reach more of them in regulation after he was ranked 64th in putts per green in regulation and 89th in making greens in regulation.

Aldrich Potgieter, playing in his first PGA Tour tournament as a newly-minted member of the tour, missed the cut, but improved by three strokes to a level-par 70 in his second round.
