Dean Burmester has a golden opportunity this week to get himself back inside the world’s top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking list when he starts in the DP World Tour’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Burmester, who forfeited what looked to be the start of a good career on the PGA Tour when he joined LIV Golf just over a year ago, has slipped from a career-high of 55th in the rankings to his current 117th.
But with loopholes starting to appear which stopped LIV players from playing on other tours – and especially on the DP World Tour – 2025 looks as if it will offer Burmester more opportunities for the world rankings points which LIV has failed to bring to its party.
He is one of a number of top-ranked LIV players in the field in Dubai, and their presence may signal the start of a change that must come in the relationships between the tours. If he has a good showing, a run at getting spots in some of the majors in 2025 would not be out of the question for Burmester.
He’s the fourth-best South African according to the official rankings. The top ranked player remains Thriston Lawrence, who gets his 2025 underway in Dubai too. He’s at 49th this week, with Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who is in action on the PGA Tour, at 57th the second-best South African.
