Daniel van Tonder picked up his second equivalent of a ‘bonus point’ win last week to see him rocket a further 75 places up the Official World Golf Ranking list to 177th after he won the MyGolfLife Open at Pecanwood.
It was his second victory in two weeks, and his fourth of the season on the Sunshine Tour. It was his second on the newly-renamed HotelPlanner Tour (formerly the Challenge Tour), and the Official World Golf Ranking recognised that with a 70 percent ‘win bonus’ of four ranking points on top of the 8.93908 he got for the victory.
Just three weeks ago, Van Tonder was ranked 411th in the world, and he was South Africa’s 23rd-best player according to the official rankings. Now he’s the sixth-best in South Africa, with a spot in the top five firmly in his sights.
Above Van Tonder, Shaun Norris was the only player in South Africa’s top five to improve his position after he finished in a share of ninth at Pecanwood. It was largely due to Norris’ presence in the field – he’s a recent winner on the Japan Golf Tour and the DP World Tour – that Van Tonder was able to take home the total points he did. His win at the SDC Open the week before was worth only 5.77226 points, plus the four-point win bonus.
Atop the South African rankings, Thriston Lawrence was not in action last week, and he was down four places to 55th.
